Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. What you share stays private, except in rare cases where safety is at risk (e.g., harm to self or others), which will be discussed clearly in your first session.
The first session is about getting to know you — your concerns, goals, and hopes for therapy. It’s a safe space to share at your own pace and ask any questions about how the process works.
